Description
It’s difficult to get from here to there in New Zealand without a half dozen or more stops along the way for scenic overlooks or short hikes. Such was the case driving north from Haast to Franz Josef on the west coast of the South Island of New Zealand, a drive which could be done in 2 hrs but naturally took much longer. Just 27 km into the drive we stopped at Knight’s Point Lookout which provides a panoramic view of the coast overlooking the Tasman Sea. Knight’s Point is famed as the location of the last section of highway completed connecting Ross in the north to the Haast Pass and inland in the south. When it came time to name the location, officials from the capital Wellington were informed that it had already been named Knight’s Point, after the dog (Knight) owned by the surveyor, Norman McGeorge.
