Paia Mantokuji Soto Mission was founded on 07 November 7, 1906 by The Reverend Sokyo Ueoka of Hiroshima , Japan .
Located on a site overlooking the Pacific Ocean on the north shore of Maui it is a beautiful temple structure which has been placed on the national and state historic registry with a cemetery and columbarium, a bell tower, a memorial monument, and a Japanese Zen Garden. Mantokuji Mission of Paia Mantokuji is a Buddhist temple of Japanese Soto Zen lineage. Soto Zen Buddhism was introduced to Japan by Dogen Zenji during the Kamakura Era and later propagated by Keizan Zenji.
The original site of the temple was adjacent to the present Paia Fire Station. The present temple building was completed in 1921 . .
The seedpods on the tree in the foreground are large and fascinating . it is a beautiful Delonix regia which is a species of flowering plant in the family Fabaceae, subfamily Caesalpinioideae. It is noted for its fern-like leaves and flamboyant display of flowers. We call it Royal Poinciana or Flamboyant. It is also one of several trees known as Flame tree and is so beautiful when in full bloom . .
