Description
Yosemite Falls and Yosemite National Park. Yosemite National Park is the second most visited National Park in the Unites States National Park system only surpassed by Yellowstone National Park. Most of the 3.7 million annual visitors visit between May and October making Yosemite Valley relatively empty during the winter.
The water flows the hardest during early spring as the snow in the high country starts melting. In years of low snowfall Yosemite Falls may dry up as early as late July.
The Upper Falls can be reached by a very steep and strenuous 3.5 mile hike up a nearly 3,000 ft gain in elevation. The lower falls can be reached through a fairly easy trail.
This image shows what is known as the beard of Yosemite Falls. The frozen ice that freezes along the sides of the fall overnight. As the day moves on and the day warms up the beard starts melting of and can completely melt by the end of the day.
